The article examines the trajectory of the Mexican magazine (paréntesis) (1999-2002), directed by Aurelio Asiain. In the context of the launch of Letras Libres—another publication that emerged, like Asiain's, after the demise of Vuelta, Octavio Paz's last magazine—the possible affiliation of (paréntesis) with Vuelta is discussed. The article also analyzes the publication's aesthetic proposal, its materiality, internal organization, editorial practices and interests, and its reception, emphasizing its playful and "irreverent" character. However, it also highlights its stance in favor of viewing literature as a reasoned and critical conversation. Although it was conceived as an eminently literary and artistic magazine, (paréntesis) became involved in various controversies. The article traces the economic difficulties that overshadowed the magazine's life until its equally controversial end.
