Abstract

In our essay, we would like to argue and demonstrate: a) the primary character of the concept of translation with respect to that of interpretation; b) the fact that translation operates simultaneously through chaining and correlation; c) that each of these two translational modes produces its own specific form of invisibility: catachresization in the case of chaining, encatalysis in the case og correlations; d) that each of the two forms of translation, once it assumes the dominant position, provides the basis for the definition of a specific ontology (or form of “instauration of the real”), which renders the other form of translation invisible.

Franciscu Sedda es catedrático de Semiótica en la Universidad de Cagliari, donde imparte Semiótica de las lenguas y de los lenguajes, Semiótica de la comunicación contemporánea y Semiótica cultural. Ha sido profesor visitante en la Universidad de Harvard y en la Pontificia Universidade de São Paulo, ha impartido conferencias en 18 países y ha publicado alrededor de 200 trabajos entre libros, volúmenes editados, ensayos y artículos. Es uno de los principales expertos internacionales
en la semiótica de las culturas y en la obra de Juri Lotman, de quien ha editado varias obras en italiano. Entre sus trabajos se encuentran la edición del volumen “Semiotics of Conflict. A Lotmanian Perspective” (con D. Monticelli y M. Maran, Tallinn University Press, 2023) y “Simboli d’oggi. Critica dell’inflazione semiotica” (con D. Mangano, Meltemi, 2024), así como las monografías “Imperfette traduzioni. Semiopolitica delle culture” (La Nuova Cultura, 2012) y “L’imprevedibile
accade. Vivere e sopravvivere nel XXI secolo” (Bompiani, 2025).
