Abstract

The aim of the article is a critical commentary, accompanied by scholarly apparatus, on some fragments of the still unpublished Italian translation of Vista del amanecer en el trópico (1974) by the Cuban writer Guillermo Cabrera Infante, with the aim of presenting some of the results of the research I have conducted on the book’s previously unpublished iconographic sources and of showing the specificity of its narrative discourse. This fragmentary narrative, which employs diverse materials (documentary and iconographic sources, manuals, and oral testimonies) and interweaves and hybridizes discursive forms (narrative, dialogue, ekphrasis, poetry, critical commentary), constitutes a kind of national “counter-history,” conceived as a catalogue of snapshots intended to foreground the most controversial aspects of Cuban history.

Alessandra Ghezzani, Università di Pisa, Italia

Profesora asociada de lengua y literaturas hispanoamericanas en la Universidad de Pisa. Ha desempeñado y desempeña numerosos cargos, entre ellos algunos en el ámbito de la alta formación. Actualmente, es miembro del Project Board de cecil (Centro de Excelencia para la Lucha contra el Empobrecimiento Lingüístico) y del Doctorado en Disciplinas Lingüísticas y Literaturas Extranjeras (Universidad de Pisa), donde desarrolla regularmente actividades de supervisión de tesis doctorales y de docencia presencial (seminarios y clases). Es delegada del Departamento de Filología, Literatura y Lingüística para la evaluación de la calidad de la investigación, y su actividad científica incluye numerosas participaciones en congresos nacionales e internacionales; realiza una actividad regular de peer review para revistas de clase A y forma parte del comité científico y editorial de al menos cinco revistas de prestigio a nivel nacional, entre ellas Altre Modernità y America Critica. Desde 2017 dirige, junto con F. Cappelli y G. Fiordaliso, la colección de estudios “SENDAS. Studi e testi sul Novecento iberico e iberoamericano” (Pisa, ETSEdizioni). Es autora de más de cuarenta publicaciones entre artículos y ensayos dedicados a la producción cultural y literaria hispanoamericana de los siglos xix y xx. Se ha dedicado al estudio de las modalidades de importación del simbolismo en América Latina, profundizando en la obra de Rubén Darío, sobre quien ha publicado numerosos trabajos y de quien ha editado la primera traducción italiana anotada de Los raros (ETS, 2012). En cuanto al siglo xx, además de ensayos y artículos sobre autores como Alejo Carpentier, Reinaldo Arenas, Virgilio Piñera, Cabrera Infante, Cristina Peri Rossi y Antonio Di Benedetto, ha centrado una parte significativa de su investigación en la obra del escritor argentino Jorge Luis Borges. Sobre Borges ha publicado la monografía Borges critico letterario. Strutture e procedimenti (ETS, 2008) y Leggere Borges (Carocci, 2023).
