The following article analyses a short story by the Spanish-Mexican writer José de la Colina using two categories: protention and retention. To support these concepts, I refer to the corresponding definitions provided by Wolfgang Iser in The Act of Reading. The story analysed is "Los Malabé," a story from the 1959 book Ven, Caballo Gris. Using the chosen terms, I distinguish some of the text's internal mechanisms, potentially experienced by the reader. This serves, among other things, to explain the presence of queerness and the main character's transvestism. "Los Malabé" is a story that should surprise the reader due to its structure, content, and outcome; all of the above can be explained by considering protention and retention.
