Rethinking Latin Americanism: Three Contemporary Interventions

Around 2018 and 2019, three critical approaches emerge that revisit the term "Latin Americanism" to explore, question, and reformulate its main hypotheses and tensions. Mary Luz Estupiñán Serrano, Clara María Parra Triana, and Raúl Rodríguez Freire write about the "Latin Americanism of decomposition"; Fernando Degiovanni proposes the idea of "vernacular Latin Americanisms"; Alejo López introduces the concept of "extraterritorial Latin Americanism." The exploration of these three cases reveals a sense of dissatisfaction with previous conceptualizations, combined with a renewed concern for the central purposes and challenges of literary criticism in the region. This criticism reinvents itself, seeking to address contemporary challenges. In each of these Latin Americanisms, crucial operations are outlined to revisit the shared past, while opening significant questions about the current state and future projection of Latin American literary criticism.
