Authorial scenographies in Octavio Paz’s “Nocturno de San Ildefonso”

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to analyze in “Nocturno de San Ildefonso” (1974) the various “authorial scenographies” as José-Luis Diaz defines the device in which the “imaginary writer” is inscribed to assume a position or literary identity and structure their public performance. In this autobiographically evocative poem, the then sixty-year-old poet recalls and reconstructs through fragments his youthful past, his first aesthetic and ideological concerns, as well as his poetic initiation. With clear romantic roots, the authorial scenographies present in “Nocturno de San Ildefonso” constitute the framework for his mature self-figuration as a visionary poet and his youthful self-representation as a budding ideologue and polemicist, at the same time that he defines, through powerful imagery, his poetic conception.

Adriana de Teresa Ochoa, Facultad de Filosofía y Letras, UNAM

Llevó a cabo sus estudios de licenciatura en Lengua y Literaturas Hispánicas y los de doctorado en Literatura en la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras (FFYL) de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM).

Actualmente, se desempeña como profesora titular “C”, con adscripción al Colegio de Letras Hispánicas de la FFYL de la UNAM. Ha impartido los cursos y seminarios de Teoría literaria, Literatura mexicana, Didáctica de la literatura, Lingüística, Teorías postestructuralistas, y sobre la obra de Octavio Paz. Simultáneamente, ha desarrollado y mantenido activas sus líneas de investigación, relacionadas con la teoría y la crítica literarias.
