This paper explores the contacts between the narrative of Mexican decadents and science, especially medicine and criminal anthropology. The central hypothesis is that from these scientific disciplines the decadents absorbed and artistically reworked not mere notions, but valuations and codes of representation of reality. Starting from theoretical assumptions of discourse analysis, and focusing on the figure of the prostitute, the article approaches Alberto Leduc (1867-1908), whose work shows the appropriation of a lexical repertoire, descriptive-narrative strategies, themes, and a way of framing reality typical of the discourse of science, which he puts into dialogue with his modernist-decadent sensibility
