Abstract

This study explores representations of America and Americans in the 18th century based on the concepts of cultural hybridization of García Canclini and tradition of Ambrosio Velasco. The first section investigates the hybridization of the American landscape as depicted in two editions of Diderot's Encyclopedia, emphasizing the complex discourse surrounding Cornelius De Pauw's notion of the savage. Following this, an analysis critiques Xavier Clavijero's nationalist interpretations, challenging his portrayal of ancient Mexicans by examining narratives that blend hegemonic influences with obscured traditions.

Author Biography

Laura Alicia Soto Rangel, UNAM

Doctora en Filosofía por la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México con la tesis “Estructura de las Disputaciones Metafísicas de Francisco Suárez”. Miembro del Sistema Nacional de Investigadores (candidata). Maestra y Licenciada en Filosofía por la UNAM. Ha realizado estancias de investigación sobre temas dedicados a la filosofía medieval y la escuela de Salamanca en la Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca, España. Actualmente es profesora de asignatura en la Facultad de Estudios Superiores Acatlán y en la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de la UNAM, donde ha impartido cursos de filosofía mexicana, ontología, filosofía medieval y del renacimiento, así como seminarios de investigación. Ha laborado en el Centro Nacional para la Evaluación de la Educación y en el Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia. Ha participado en diversos congresos nacionales e internacionales, de los cuales ha sido co-organizadora de Simposios en congresos de la Asociación Filosófica de México. Participa en proyectos de investigación como “Reflexiones filosóficas España-México”. Entre sus publicaciones académicas se encuentran:“Poema Heroico de Diego Abad, metafísica y teología”; “Luis de Molina y Santo Tomás de Aquino frente a la ciencia de Dios”; “Principio y causa en las Disputaciones Metafísicas de
Francisco Suárez”; y “Fundamento de la definición unívoca de alma en De anima de Francisco Suárez”. Ha sido co-coordinadora de libros como Nociones filosóficas y prácticas de la justicia y Reflexiones filosóficas España-México. Coordinadora del Seminario de Filosofía Medieval de la Facultad de Estudios Superiores Acatlán de la UNAM y Miembro de la Mesa Directiva de la AFM.
