Abstract

After a brief review of the criticism of Juan Rulfo’s work, and the discussion that arose therein between the dichotomy of nationalism versus cosmopolitanism, we propose with the analysis of Retales. Compilación de Juan Rulfo and some of his interviews, that the author from Jalisco disarmed the existing dichotomy (nationalism versus cosmopolitanism) and succeeded in empowering Mexican literature by presenting a personal canon of authors from the western periphery. This canon of authors from the periphery allows us to see two significant actions of Rulfo’s work, following Pascale Casanova’s methodology, and they are: 1) the obtaining of the “markers of difference” of Mexican literature, and 2) the adoption of avant-garde forms of writing, already existing in Scandinavian and Swiss authors, which formed his personal literary canon.

Alejandro Lámbarry, Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla

Doctor en Literatura Hispanoamericana por la Universidad de París IV Sorbona. Desde 2013 es profesor-investigador en el Departamento de Filosofía y Letras de la Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla. Es autor de las biografías Jorge Ibargüengoitia: un escritor entre ruinas (2022), Augusto Monterroso, en busca del dinosaurio (2019), el libro de crítica literaria El otro radical. La voz animal en la literatura hispanoamericana (2015), y la serie de novelas Las aventuras de un lanzador de enanos, Yo, emperador y Un puñito de cenizas. Ha publicado más de 20 capítulos y artículos académicos sobre la literatura hispanoamericana del siglo XX y XXI desde la teoría biográfica, la sociología literaria y los estudios animales; en coautoría ha editado los libros La mosca en el canon. Ensayos sobre Augusto Monterroso, Averías literarias. Ensayos sobre César Aira, La letra M. Ensayos sobre Augusto Monterroso, Cristina Rivera Garza: una escritura impropia y Bellatin en su proceso: los gestos de una escritura.
