This article studies the look of the animal in the novel La ideología de los perros (2020) by the writer Mauricio Embry. The narration focuses on the voice of a child who grows up in a post-dictatorship Chile and, moreover, does so from a pinochetist home. This voice intersects with two other characters, Andrés and Arnoldo, to form a single story.
In this framework, the research hypothesis maintains that the encounter with the gaze of the animal enables the emergence of alternate discourses such as those of a child, a drunk and a madman, through which each character can recognize the other and, upon seeing observed by that other, he can also discover himself. To account for this, the analysis is guided by Jacques Derrida's theoretical proposal on the question of animals, in El animal que luego estoy si(gui)endo (2006).
