In the poetry of Ramón López Velarde the presence of the heart and soul is fundamental. Both concepts are not simple and unique, but complex and diverse. There is a confessional and intimate heart, called “San Agustín’s Heart”; a heart as an organ of the body, known as “Harveys¨heart”; and a symbolic heart, which receives the name of “Lion Heart”. In correspondence with these elements, there is an individual soul belonging to the lyrical subject; an “Anima mundi”, relative to the beauty f the world; and a Higher Soul, which refers to the world of Platonic or archetypal ideas. Base on an approach thypical of Mytocriticism, the importance of the symbol, the myth and the archetype in the poetry of López Velarde is demonstrated. These elements and the triple structure of the heart and soul provide a universal dimensión to López Velarde´s poetry.
